Designing for a Digital 3D film requires an attention for detail. No shortcuts. SharkNight takes place on the Gulf Coast where a group of college students on spring break are terrorized by several species of sharks that have been released in the salt water bay where they are staying at a home on a private island.

Finding an isolated location that eventually could be shot as an island was our first priority. The home that we found had all the right elements but lacked the charm as described by the script and requested by the Producers. The original home was a single story home so a second story was built as a facade and then the exterior brick was covered with siding and tied into the existing roof line. A screened porch was added to a large flat area to offer additional depth.

Additional scenes required a beach area where one of the characters would be attacked by a shark which required excavating the existing shore and then bringing in sand. All interior and exterior scenes were shot over a three week period with additional smaller sets that were built near the location.

Because there were many scenes that were filmed underwater we used an exterior tank that was one hundred feet by one hundred fifty feet and ten feet deep. The tank bottom was painted and then washed rock that had been sealed was then added. Mobile berms of sea grass and rock were built and then floated into place by our underwater team. As a certified diver with underwater experience I was left to direct the placement and fine tuning of the underwater greenery.

All of the water work was done at the beginning of the shooting schedule which required that all locations and set pieces were designed so that they could match. The interior of a boat shed that had been converted into an underwater shark pit was built both on location and in the tank. The dive boat which was also a big part of the film had to shot both on location and in the tank.
